The Ikea Apartment

2006-1204BoKlokFloorPlan.jpg

CoolTown Studios reports that Ikea is getting into the business of building homes, not just decorating them. The company is called BoKlok. They have had apartments on the ground in Sweden and Norway for a few years are now expanding into the UK. The vision: "to provide better homes for the many people." They are focusing on lower middle income households that are currently being priced out of the market but make too much to qualify for subsidies, but no one will be excluded. The design concept is "a flexible open-plan layout, high ceilings and large windows, giving the apartments a light, airy and contemporary feel." They use sustainable materials, energy efficient mechanical systems, and give each unit access to green space (including fruit trees). Sounds exactly like what you would imagine from Ikea.
